Realist Landscape painter George Shaw is shortlisted for the 2011 Turner Prize. His paintings are mostly of subjects within the Tile Hill area of Coventry. This traditional working class background is at odds with Shaw’s interest in poetry and Radio plays. The act of painting for Shaw is one of memory and the places that he depicts are decaying postwar industrial estates.
Shaw would not be the first realist painter to win the Turner prize, the first winner in 1984 Malcolm Morley has that destinction. In recent years the draughtsman Richard Wright also used a graphic medium in a shortlist dominated by sculpture.
